How to Unformat Hard Drive to Retrieve Lost Files
What is formatting?
Formatting practically means to prepare a storage medium, usually a hard drive, for reading and writing. When you format hard drive, the operating system erases all bookkeeping information on the disk, tests the disk to make sure all sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors, and creates internal address tables that it later uses to locate information.
How to unformat hard drive to get lost files back?
When the disk or a partition has been formatted, usually all the data on it would be deleted. And you will find there are lots of free spaces for you to write new data on it. That’s the change you can see after the formatting. Actually the operating system is just telling you that the partition is re-usable now, which doesn’t mean the original files are gone permanently. They are still there, where you can’t see them or access to them directly. But they can be rescued via unformat software, such as Spotmau PowerSuite Golden, which can perform perfect format recovery.
Note: Never install it on the drive from which you want to recover data, also never save any data on the same drive from which you are recovering data.
Step1. Choose formatted recovery
Run this format data recovery software on your computer, go to “Data Recovery Kit”, and then choose the “Formatted Recovery”, which will rescue your files from accidentally formatted disks or partitions. Then start the recovery.
Step2. Select the partition for recovery
Select the partition you have formatted mistakenly, and set the previous file system, if you have no idea, you can leave it as unknown. Then hit “Scan”. Just leave the setting on the right alone if you are not an advanced user. If you are, you can set the sector and cluster for accurate scan.
Step2. Begin format recovery
When the scan completes, there will be tons of files scanned out. It’s not a good idea to recover them all. You can use the “Filter Options” to simplify the recovery result by setting the “Extensions, Date or Size” for the files. You can only choose pictures, music, video, or documents for recovery, even add new type as your special items that are not contained here. You also can target your recovering files to the exact format of pictures, music, video, or documents. Then you only need to click “Save” to preserve your back files on your computer, and leave the recovering work to the PowerSuite.
Tips: When we need to execute formatting?
For system errors, such as operating system not found, invalid or corrupt FAT, cannot find file or program, invalid command.com, primary/secondary hard disk failure, non system disk, etc. For personal reasons, like getting rid of a nasty virus, cleaning hard drive to sell, or planning to donate computers, etc.
